Two people sustained slight injuries early on Wednesday morning after a gas deflagration occurred inside a flat in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona's second-largest city. Emergency services responded to the incident on Avenida Severo Ochoa at 00:24, which caused a partition wall to collapse.

Emergency Services Mobilise

The 112 emergency line received the initial alert for a gas fire at 00:24. The Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) quickly mobilised nine ambulances to the scene. They attended to a total of five individuals affected by the incident. Two people, however, required hospital transport due to their slight injuries. One person went to Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, and the other to Hospital General de l'Hospitalet. The swift response aimed to minimise further harm and provide immediate medical attention.

Damage Assessment and Building Safety

The Bombers de la Generalitat dispatched four units to the affected building. Their primary tasks included ventilating the flat and thoroughly inspecting the building's overall condition. A partition wall inside the flat collapsed due to the explosion's force. However, the fire service confirmed that the deflagration did not cause "serious structural damage" to the building. This assessment helps ensure the safety of other residents and the integrity of the structure.

Local Impact and Future Investigations

L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, directly bordering Barcelona, is a densely populated urban centre. It is home to over 260,000 residents and forms a critical part of the wider Barcelona metropolitan area. Incidents involving gas deflagrations raise immediate safety concerns for residents in multi-occupancy buildings. Authorities will likely investigate the exact cause of this incident. This helps prevent similar occurrences and reinforces public safety measures across the city. The two injured individuals are now recovering in hospital.
