Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police, arrested a 23-year-old man on Saturday after rescuing him while he was swimming far from the coast off Barcelona's Port Olímpic. Police found that he was subject to an outstanding arrest order issued by a court in Vigo.

The intervention brought a swimmer suffering mild hypothermia ashore and enforced the court order, after an incident that began with warnings for him to stop swimming further out to sea.

Rescue after warnings from maritime services

According to information provided by the Mossos to Europa Press, Salvamento Marítim, Spain's maritime safety service, told the man to stop swimming offshore, but he did not follow the instructions.

A Mossos patrol responded after an alert was received at 19:58 and rescued him from waters off the Port Olímpic.

Identity check revealed Vigo arrest order

Officers checked the man's identity after bringing him to safety and confirmed the arrest order from the Vigo court. They then arrested him.

Swimmers who receive instructions from Salvamento Marítim to return to shore should follow them immediately.
