In brief: If you only have a few large items to shift, a full removals company is usually unnecessary: rent a small van or pay for one van-and-driver job, and dispose of unwanted furniture at no cost on your street's collection night (8pm to 10pm). Fridges, washing machines and similar appliances must not be left on the street: take them to a Punt Verd, or give them to the retailer supplying your replacement, free of charge. Arrange a street parking permit ahead of moving day.
Last checked 28th October 2026: furniture collection rules, appliance disposal, the removals parking permit and its fee checked against the Ajuntament de Barcelona's waste finder, its Oficina Virtual and the Spanish appliance-waste regulation on the BOE.
What people in Barcelona ask
These are the questions members of a Barcelona English-speakers community of 3,000+ people raise most often.
- With only a handful of bulky items, is there a more economical route than paying for a full removals quote?
- Which removal firms dismantle flat-pack furniture and put it back together?
- Where might I find free or heavy-duty moving boxes?
- What are my options for disposing of a fridge, a TV or furniture that is too heavy for me to carry downstairs alone?
Choosing how to move
- Two or three bulky items: hiring a self-drive van for the day, or booking a single van-and-driver job, normally covers it. Insist on a written price that includes stairs, waiting time and any parking charges.
- An entire flat: approach no fewer than three removals companies and request a written quote once they have reviewed the inventory, preferably through photos or a video call. Check whether they supply their own boxes, whether they take furniture apart and put it back together, and what their insurance pays out for breakages.
- Flat-pack furniture: state clearly when requesting quotes that you want items dismantled and rebuilt, since not all movers offer this. Bag up the screws for each item, label the bag and tape it to the piece.
Moving day, step by step
- If the van will be stopping on the street, request a removals permit through the Ajuntament's Oficina Virtual, the council's online procedures portal. Apply no more than 15 days in advance and at least two days before. Permits for vans of up to 3,500 kg are issued immediately.
- For a heavier lorry (over 3,500 kg), or where a lifting platform is required, you must apply at least five working days beforehand and settle the €44.20 management fee first.
- Either print the permit or keep it on your phone, as it must be shown at the location on the day.
- Look up the furniture collection day for your street using the Ajuntament's waste finder, or ask by phoning 010.
- On the appointed day, leave old furniture outside between 8pm and 10pm, in front of your building's entrance and beside the kerb.
- Appliances, electronics and any other items the street collection will not take should be brought to a Punt Verd, the city's household waste recycling centre.

What goes wrong
- Appliances dumped on the pavement. Fridges, washing machines and air-conditioning units must not be left in the street, furniture night included. Take them to a Punt Verd or return them to the retailer.
- Rubble and construction waste. Rubble and similar building-work refuse is not accepted by the street collection service.
- Furniture put out on the wrong night, or stacked against the façade in a way that obstructs the pavement for blind pedestrians. Confirm your street's designated day beforehand.
- No permit on the day. A van parked double without a permit may be fined, and a company could pass that cost on to you. Establish who is applying for the permit.
- Quotes given verbally. Surcharges for stairs, waiting time or an unforeseen second trip are the most frequent source of complaints. Insist on the price in writing.
Boxes and packing
For books and kitchenware, supermarket and shop boxes will do provided you choose strong ones; for heavy or fragile items, double-wall boxes from DIY stores or removals companies justify the cost. Put books in small boxes, write the destination room on each box, and set aside a "first night" box containing chargers, bedding, a kettle and toilet paper.
Barcelona specifics
- Each street has its own designated night for leaving furniture out. In certain hillside neighbourhoods, including parts of Vallvidrera and the area around Tibidabo, you must call ahead first; consult the waste finder.
- Support for residents with reduced mobility. Holders of a disability certificate or accredited reduced mobility status can arrange a free home collection in advance with the Ajuntament, the city council, via its online procedure.
- Old clothing and linen can also be picked up from your home, provided you have at least five household bin bags (two if you have accredited reduced mobility).
- Leaving a rental property? Our guide to getting your deposit back sets out how to recover your money, while the flat set-up guide explains how to transfer your utilities.
FAQ
What time do I put furniture out in Barcelona?
On your street's designated collection day, between 8pm and 10pm, outside your building's entrance and beside the kerb. The day varies from street to street.
Can I leave a fridge or washing machine on the street?
No. Electrical appliances should be taken to a Punt Verd, the city's recycling point, or returned to the retailer when you buy a replacement; shops are obliged to accept an equivalent old appliance at no charge.
Do I need a permit for a removals van?
Yes, provided the vehicle is going to stop on the street. Applications are made through the Oficina Virtual, the Ajuntament's online portal, between 2 and 15 days in advance, for a van of up to 3,500 kg.
Is furniture collection free?
For private individuals, the kerbside pick-up of old furniture and unwanted items costs nothing.
Will the shop collect my old appliance at home?
When a new appliance is delivered to your home, the retailer is obliged to take back the equivalent old item at no charge at the same time. Should you return it at a later point, the shop must allow you a minimum of 30 days to hand it in, together with your receipt.
