Christmas markets in Barcelona 2026: dates, fairs and lights
Last updated 26 October 2026
Christmas in Barcelona 2026 is expected to run 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, dates still to be confirmed. Barcelona's traditional markets, festive illuminations and nativity scenes are all part of the season, stretching from the Fira de Santa Llúcia, held outside the cathedral, to the fairground on the Moll de la Fusta. Entry to wander around is free at nearly every one of them.
What it is

In Barcelona, Christmas is marked by Catalan tradition rather than the northern European model. The customary markets stock Christmas trees, moss, cork bark and nativity figures, and two figures appear throughout. The caganer is a small crouching character placed in a corner of the nativity scene. The tió is a log with a painted face which children feed during December and then strike with sticks until it yields its presents. The season is a lengthy one: it does not end on Christmas Day but continues through Sant Esteve and New Year until the arrival of the Three Kings, who bring the main presents.
The city's Christmas lights are switched on by the council late in November, with the markets opening at roughly the same time. Entry to browse is free at nearly all of them, and the majority shut up shop before the Kings arrive.
The markets worth knowing
Fira de Santa Llúcia. The longest-running of the city's Christmas fairs, and the obvious place to start. Stalls have occupied the Pla de la Seu and the Avinguda de la Catedral, in front of the cathedral, since at least 1786, selling nativity figures, trees, moss, tions, handicrafts, and the drums and tambourines that accompany traditional Catalan carols. The fair is named after Santa Llúcia, whose feast day falls in December, and it always opens ahead of that date.
Fira de Nadal de la Sagrada Família. A craft, gift and decoration market on the square beneath the basilica, which also offers a fine excuse to view the building illuminated after nightfall.
Nadal al Port. A more recent and livelier event held on the Moll de la Fusta in Port Vell, the city's old port, featuring light installations, food stands and fairground rides by the water. It keeps going later into the evening than the traditional fairs.
Local fairs. A number of districts run their own smaller Christmas and Kings fairs. These include Sant Antoni on the Avinguda de Mistral, Creu Coberta in Sants, the Diagonal in Les Corts, the Via Júlia in Nou Barris, and an artisans' fair in Gràcia.
The Fira de Reis on the Gran Via. The days before the Kings bring their own sprawling street fair of toys, sweets and presents, which features in our guide to the Three Kings in Barcelona.
The nativity scene in Plaça de Sant Jaume
The public nativity scene that appears at Christmas in the square linking the City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat, the seat of the Catalan government, has a long tradition, and its design is frequently modern enough to provoke debate. This year's installation has yet to be revealed, and details will be added here once they are.
Where it is
Events take place right across Barcelona. The longest-running market can be found opposite the cathedral in the Gothic Quarter, while a large crafts fair occupies the area below the Sagrada Família. The most recent addition is down by the water at Port Vell, and the illuminations stretch through the principal shopping streets of the old town and the Eixample.
Metro: Jaume I (L4) for the cathedral, Sagrada Família (L2, L5), Drassanes (L3) for Port Vell.
What to plan around
Expected in about 33 days, dates to be confirmed. Christmas in Barcelona is expected to run 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.
Dates are announced by the fairs and the council in the autumn, and at the time of our last check none had confirmed this year's dates. The range displayed stretches from the cathedral fair's customary opening to the Kings, and a date below is marked as confirmed only when two independent sources agree on it.
Everything else on
Gigs, performances and activities for all ages taking place over the season are listed in our searchable events directory as and when organisers submit them, with the listing refreshed twice daily. Browse every event over the season.
Practical notes
Getting there. The closest metro stop for the Fira de Santa Llúcia is Jaume I (L4); alternatively, walk up from Plaça de Catalunya through the old town. The Sagrada Família fair sits next to Sagrada Família station (L2, L5). To reach the Moll de la Fusta, take Drassanes (L3) or Barceloneta (L4).
Visit early. The cathedral fair draws its biggest crowds on weekend evenings, when the illuminations are switched on and the old town's narrow streets become packed. A weekday morning is much quieter.
Two public holidays. In Catalonia, both Christmas Day and Sant Esteve, the following day, are public holidays, and most shops, banks and offices shut on each of them.
Keep an eye on your belongings. The markets and the lights pull in large numbers of people, and the narrow lanes of the old town, thick with crowds, are prime territory for pickpockets.
Dates are not fixed from year to year. Announcements of dates for the fairs and by the council come in the autumn, and in some cases only a few weeks in advance. A date on this page is shown as confirmed only when two independent sources match, and the sources set out below are checked twice daily.
