Bombers de la Generalitat, Catalonia's fire and rescue service, were tackling a fire inside Can Mata landfill in Els Hostalets de Pierola from 11:53 on Sunday 2 August. The incident initially affected about 30 square metres of waste, according to information reported by El Periódico Barcelona.
For residents of Els Hostalets de Pierola, the fire was reported to be contained within the landfill. Firefighters were working to extinguish it fully and prevent it spreading to other parts of the site.
Four fire-service crews attended and used a water hose line to control the flames. The fire mainly affected an area containing plastic waste.
Workers for the company managing the landfill were assisting firefighters with an excavator and other heavy machinery to move earth around the affected area.
Two earlier fires recorded in July
The incident is the third fire recorded at Can Mata in just over a month.
- On the night of 2 July, six Bombers crews attended a fire at the landfill.
- On 4 July, another fire prompted the deployment of five crews.
- At the time, the Ajuntament de Els Hostalets de Pierola, the local council, said the two July incidents could be linked.
Heavy machinery was also used during the July fires to cover the source of the fire with earth. Bombers continued work on Sunday to put out the latest blaze and stop it reaching other landfill areas.
