TMB maps routes to Barcelona climate shelters

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the city’s main public transport operator, has mapped public transport links to Barcelona’s climate shelters for the summer, identifying metro L1 and bus H8 as the routes serving the largest concentrations of facilities.

The guidance is aimed at residents seeking respite from high temperatures. TMB says almost all 574 shelters it identifies are a short walk from a metro station or bus stop, while the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the City Council, currently lists 570 shelters on its official directory.

The network includes libraries, community centres, museums and shaded outdoor spaces. The City Council says more than 75% of its shelters are indoors, with the remainder including parks, gardens, playgrounds, water-play areas and some swimming pools.

Lines serving the highest concentrations

According to TMB’s analysis of City Council location data and its transport network, Sant Andreu has 74 climate shelters and Eixample has 73. Metro L1 and the H8 bus route cross the areas with the highest number of facilities.

More than 60 micro climate shelters: small free indoor spaces, including pharmacies, shops and organisations, where people can rest briefly and drink water, according to the City Council.

TMB says its buses and trains can also provide air-conditioned space while passengers travel. It recommends using the TMB App’s “I want to go” journey-planning function to check the quickest combinations and estimated waiting times.

Check the shelter before setting out

The City Council says 99.2% of Barcelona residents have a climate shelter within a ten-minute walk of home. The network is intended for all residents, particularly older people, young children and people who cannot maintain a comfortable temperature at home.

Residents can use the City Council’s official climate shelters list to filter locations by district, type and features such as accessibility, drinking water, toilets, Wi-Fi and whether a space is indoors or outdoors.

The Council advises people to check opening hours before visiting. It also warns that outdoor sites may not provide comfortable temperatures during heat waves.
