Weekend Car-Free Zones Across Barcelona
Barcelona is closing several of its main streets to motorised traffic every weekend under the ongoing 'Obrim Carrers' initiative, which aims to reduce pollution and encourage sustainable mobility. The scheme runs each Saturday and Sunday throughout the year, excluding July and August, transforming major urban corridors into spaces for walking, cycling, skating, and community activities. From October to April, the car-free periods last from 9:00 AM to 2:00 AM the following day. Between May and September, the hours are from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, according to official notices from the Ajuntament de Barcelona.
Where and How It Applies
Key areas affected include Gran de Gràcia and the Eix Creu Coberta in Sants, where vehicle access is restricted to prioritise pedestrians and outdoor recreation. Residents, emergency services, municipal vehicles, delivery trucks during loading hours, and people with reduced mobility are permitted to enter, provided they follow designated routes and instructions from traffic assistants. Those accessing private parking must do so via the nearest cross street. Bicycles and electric scooters may circulate but must respect pedestrian priority and maintain a maximum speed of 10 km/h. In crowded conditions, riders must dismount and proceed on foot.
Public Transport Adjustments
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has confirmed route diversions for several bus lines. On Gran de Gràcia, lines V17, 22, 24 and 114 are rerouted, with multiple stops suspended and alternative stops provided. On Eix Creu Coberta, lines D20 and V5 are affected, with changes in both directions.
Users are advised to check real-time updates via TMB’s service notices for accurate journey planning during Obrim Carrers weekends.
Passengers are encouraged to use alternative bus lines or metro stations such as Diagonal (L3/L5), Fontana (L3) and Lesseps (L3) to access affected zones. Full details on diversions and alternative stops are available on the TMB website.
Community Use and Activities
Local district councils and neighbourhood and commercial associations often organise events during Obrim Carrers to animate the streets, including games, readings, and cultural activities. These aim to strengthen community life and support local businesses. The programme resumed on 5th and 6th September 2026, as confirmed by the Barcelona City Council, and continues weekly under the city’s urban mobility strategy.
