AI and Electrification in Focus at Mobility Congress

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will showcase a series of innovation projects at the Tomorrow Mobility World Congress 2026, running from Tuesday 3rd November to Thursday 5th November at Fira Barcelona Gran Via. The agency will present advancements in artificial intelligence, bus electrification, and real-time service monitoring aimed at improving public transport reliability and efficiency. TMB's participation includes presentations at its own exhibition stand and at the congress's Shapping Mobility area. The event marks the agency's continued push toward sustainable and digitally enhanced urban mobility.

Leadership to Present Innovation Strategy

On Tuesday 3rd November at 9:30 AM in the Shapping Mobility area, TMB president Laia Bonet and CEO Xavier Flores will join a session on the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility (BILM), a new innovation platform TMB has recently joined. The session will review existing mobility innovations in the city and outline upcoming challenges in delivering scalable, real-world solutions. Later that day at 11:00 AM, TMB's director of central bus services, Josep Mensión, will present a new analytical tool at the TMB stand that measures commercial bus speeds across different route sections. This data will help identify congestion points and inform infrastructure or operational improvements to enhance punctuality and flow.

The tool allows us to pinpoint where action is needed to improve vehicle circulation, said Josep Mensión.

At 1:30 PM on the same day, CEO Xavier Flores will present TMB's study on the cost of electrifying its entire bus fleet at the Shapping Mobility area. The full transition to electric buses is projected to save over €66 million, according to a TMB report published earlier this year.

Intelligent Buses and Predictive Metro Maintenance

On Wednesday 4th November at 3:30 PM, TMB heads of bus technology Diego Domínguez and technological operation systems Joan Puigdellivol will discuss the 'intelligent bus' project at the TMB stand. The initiative uses camera footage from buses to monitor road conditions, detect obstacles, and improve service planning in real time. Also on Wednesday at 11:00 AM, TMB will present a new AI-powered pilot project for the metro system at its stand. Led by metro director David Prat and head of digitisation and innovation Vicenç Rius, the project focuses on predictive maintenance using artificial intelligence to detect potential infrastructure or train faults before they disrupt service. The presentation is titled Mind the Digitalization Gap: Rewiring maintenance in Metro Barcelona. These developments form part of TMB's broader strategy to integrate digital tools across its network, enhancing safety, sustainability, and passenger experience.
