Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) is restarting its historic "Tren Granota" (Frog Train) service this Sunday, offering six special journeys between Les Planes and the cities of Terrassa and Sabadell. This iconic train allows passengers to experience railway history across the Barcelonès and Vallès Occidental regions, connecting residents with a piece of Catalonia's past.

The "Tren Granota" will operate on the first Sunday of each month from May to December, excluding July and August. This initiative highlights FGC's rich heritage and provides a unique travel opportunity for residents and tourists alike. Passengers can use integrated tickets or FGC-specific tickets, with fares varying by journey length and destination.

Reviving Railway Heritage

The "Tren Granota" served the region between 1944 and 1996. FGC built these trains to modernise suburban services from Sarrià, extending to Les Planes, Sant Cugat, Rubí, Terrassa, and Sabadell. These routes connect key areas of the Barcelona metropolitan region and the wider Vallès Occidental, which is home to over 900,000 residents.

The journey itself passes several Modernist-style stations, including Les Planes and Sant Quirze del Vallès. These architectural gems add to the historical experience of the trip. The service aims to put value on FGC's railway patrimony, according to a statement from the operator. It offers a tangible link to Catalonia's transport evolution.

The seasonal return of the "Tren Granota" provides a distinct cultural and historical attraction for those living in or visiting Barcelona. It allows a new generation to appreciate the engineering and design of a bygone era. This unique service reinforces the importance of preserving historical transport for future enjoyment and education.
