Each night, 150 Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) workers at the Zona Franca depot perform essential, unseen tasks. They prepare 532 buses for daily service across Barcelona's southern zone. This critical overnight operation ensures that one in three TMB users can rely on a ready public transport network each morning.

The work begins as buses finish their routes. Peak arrival time is between 22:00 and 23:00. Over 100 vehicles enter the depot during this hour. Workers clean bus interiors. They refuel gas and hydrogen vehicles, or charge electric models. An exterior wash in the automated tunnel completes the process.

"When night arrives, the buses continue working," stated Laia Bonet, President of TMB and First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council. She added, "They arrive when their shift ends and perform a series of essential tasks. This ensures that the next day, when service starts again, the bus is ready."

Ensuring Daily Readiness

Beyond daily cleaning, the Zona Franca depot also handles regular mechanical maintenance. It is the largest of TMB's three facilities. Technicians repair any vehicle breakdowns as needed. These current-generation buses have a maximum lifespan of 12 to 14 years.

Unlike private vehicles, technicians visit the depots. They conduct the mandatory vehicle technical inspection (ITV) every six months. This ensures all buses meet safety and operational standards. The Zona Franca depot features four separate parking zones and two workshops. These manage its large fleet efficiently.

Barcelona's Extensive Bus Network

TMB operates a fleet of over 1,000 buses across Barcelona. These vehicles are distributed among three main depots: Horta, Triangle, and Zona Franca. The bus network is a vital part of the city's public transport system. It serves hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors daily.

The meticulous overnight preparation ensures smooth operations for the entire city. This includes residents in areas like the Eixample district, home to 260,000 residents. They rely on efficient bus services. Tourists and expats also use the extensive network to navigate Barcelona.

Ready for Morning Service

After 03:00, all preparation work concludes. The buses then rest briefly. By 04:30, the first vehicles start their engines again. They leave the Zona Franca depot to begin their routes across Barcelona's streets. The buses are ready for the morning rush.
