Over 3,000 cyclists, including many families, rode through Barcelona in early May. They participated in the fifth Kidical Mass event. This demonstration demanded a safer, more child-friendly city with improved cycling infrastructure.

Organisers stated the event championed the right of children to travel safely and independently by bicycle. This applies especially to daily journeys, such as trips to school or leisure activities. The festive ride started at Carrer d'Aragó with Plaça del Doctor Letamendi. It concluded at Glòries.

Calls for a Human-Centred Urban Model

The initiative called for Barcelona to move away from motor vehicles. It advocated for a more human-centred urban model. This model should be walkable, cyclable, and playful. It would connect neighbourhoods, strengthen community ties, and exclude no one. Organisers envision a Barcelona free from smoke, noise, and inequality. They also want to guarantee safe and friendly spaces for children.

Barcelona first hosted Kidical Mass in 2022. Over 2,000 participants cycled through the Eixample district. The 2023 event saw more than 1,000 people ride along major routes like Avinguda Diagonal and Passeig de Sant Joan. In 2024, Poblenou hosted the largest edition yet. Nearly 3,000 participants filled the coastal streets.

Demands for Safer Cycling Infrastructure

The 2025 ride went through the Sant Andreu neighbourhood. Several thousand participants demanded better cycling infrastructure. They also called for a city designed with a "4-80 vision". This vision ensures anyone from 4 to 80 years old can cycle safely and confidently.

Kidical Mass and the Red Bicibús de Barcelona specifically demand a safe, continuous, and protected cycling network. They also seek a reduction in traffic violence and associated risks. The groups advocate for safe and healthy school environments. They want improved connections between neighbourhoods and districts. Incorporating children's perspectives into urban planning is another key demand. The initiative urges the city to overcome its culture of haste. It also wants to move beyond an urban model focused on private vehicles. Finally, it demands the right to a city free from harassment and violence in public spaces.

Global Movement and Local Support

The Bicicleta Club de Catalunya (BACC) supports the initiative. Other supporters include Biciclot, Revolta Escolar, Eixample Respira, Maragall Respira, and En Bici Sin Edad. EIT Urban Mobility also backs Kidical Mass Barcelona for the second consecutive year. This European Union initiative promotes safer, more sustainable, and inclusive urban mobility.

Kidical Mass began in 2008 in Oregon, USA. It has gained significant traction in Europe. Germany, particularly Cologne, has led its growth since 2017. In 2022, over 90,000 children, young people, and families participated in more than 400 European cities. This year, dozens of cities across Europe and the United States held their own Kidical Mass events. These cities include Cologne, Zurich, Lisbon, Milan, Glasgow, and Rome. They all advocate for friendlier, safer, and healthier cities for children.

Barcelona's Kidical Mass event joined a weekend dedicated to cycling. This included the Masa Crítica on Friday, 1 May, starting at Arc de Triomf. The Criticona (Pantumacona) took place on Saturday, 2 May. Both events highlighted the bicycle's role as a daily, sustainable, and collective mode of transport. The continued participation in these events shows a strong community desire for urban change. Residents expect city planners to consider these demands.
