Three people sustained injuries, two seriously, following a collision between a car and a coach carrying 43 passengers on the AP-7 motorway near Maçanet de la Selva on Sunday, 3 May, at 09:15. The incident caused significant traffic delays on the critical northbound route.
The car's passenger became trapped inside the vehicle. Five units from the Generalitat Fire Service responded and worked to extricate the individual. Paramedics from the Medical Emergency System (SEM) then transported this person in a serious condition to Doctor Trueta Hospital in Girona.
The car's driver also went to Doctor Trueta Hospital. This individual sustained less serious injuries and managed to exit the vehicle independently before medical assistance arrived. Additionally, one coach passenger, a woman, suffered a minor wrist injury. SEM personnel treated her at the scene and discharged her immediately.
Emergency Response and Road Closures
Emergency services received the alert via the 112 emergency telephone. In total, four SEM ambulances and several Mossos d'Esquadra patrols joined the Fire Service at the incident site. The collision occurred at kilometre point 85 of the northbound AP-7.
Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the rear-end collision between the car and the coach. Both vehicles sustained significant damage. They remained on the motorway hard shoulder until recovery services could remove them.
Impact on Travel and Local Context
The coach company quickly dispatched a replacement vehicle. This ensured the 43 passengers and driver could continue their journey to their destination. The Catalan Traffic Service reported on social media platform X that only one lane of the AP-7 remained open during emergency operations. This partial closure caused traffic queues stretching up to 3 kilometres.
The AP-7 motorway is a critical artery connecting Barcelona with Girona and the French border. Thousands of commuters and tourists use it daily. Disruptions like this collision significantly impact travel across Catalonia, affecting residents and visitors alike.
Authorities continue investigations into the collision's cause. They expect to release further details as these become available. Motorists should check traffic updates when planning journeys on major routes like the AP-7 to avoid unexpected delays.
