A power cut left 90,000 customers in northern Barcelona and nearby metropolitan areas without electricity for over an hour on Wednesday morning. The outage originated from a high-voltage fault at an electrical substation in Sant Andreu.

The incident began at 10:21, affecting districts such as Horta, Sant Gervasi, Nou Barris, and Sant Andreu. It also impacted residents in Montcada i Reixac and Badalona, two municipalities bordering Barcelona.

Barcelona Fire Brigade units and Endesa personnel responded to the scene. The power company confirmed that all affected customers had their supply restored by 11:17.

Collserola Fire and Road Closures

Betevé reported that three high-voltage towers caught fire in the Collserola mountain range. This blaze occurred in the Torre Baró neighbourhood, specifically on Turó d'en Segarra.

The fire led to the closure of Carretera Alta de Roquetes. Additionally, bus line 182 saw its route limited to Plaça de Karl Marx. This caused disruption for commuters in the affected areas.

The Ajuntament de Barcelona also confirmed to Betevé that firefighters attended multiple high-voltage towers. Social media users posted images of smoke from the burning towers, expressing concern.

Public Reaction and Endesa Response

Many residents expressed concern online, with some asking if this was another major blackout. This incident occurred two days after the first anniversary of a significant power outage in the city.

Endesa sources explained that high-voltage line incidents affect many customers. However, they are often easier to manage due to modern technology. The system is digitalised and remotely controlled from a central hub.

The company quickly used the medium-voltage network to restore power to affected clients. This swift action helped minimise the overall impact on daily life.

The swift resolution prevented a prolonged disruption for thousands of homes and businesses across the affected districts. This incident highlights the city's reliance on its strong electrical infrastructure and the importance of quick emergency responses.
