Tram Services Resume Amid Final Phase of Glòries Upgrade
Barcelona's T4, T5 and T6 Trambesòs lines will restore service this Sunday, 13 September, following a 10-week suspension for track upgrades around Plaça de les Glòries. The works, which began on 3 July, focused on replacing the single tram lane along Gran Via with a new double-track platform shared with buses. The project, led by the Barcelona City Council and the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM), forms part of the broader Diagonal tram connection plan to improve public transport capacity and pedestrian access. As confirmed by city council notices published in June, the changes include realigning the tram route along Avinguda Diagonal on its seaward side and modifying the layout at Carrer Ciutat de Granada.
Service Restoration and Ongoing Disruptions
From Sunday, line T4 will run again between Verdaguer and El Maresme stops, while T5 and T6 will resume operations between Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica and Sant Martí de Provençals. On Monday, 14 September, the T4 will fully return to its regular terminus at Sant Adrià station. Despite the restoration, partial closures will persist. From late September until spring 2027, the section between Glòries and Can Jaumandreu will remain closed for T5 and T6 services due to ongoing construction.
The transformation of this section of Gran Via will create a space prioritising walking, games and public use, responding to long-standing resident demands.
During the suspension, replacement bus services operated along the affected segments, including dedicated shuttles for T4 between Verdaguer and El Maresme, and for T5 and T6 between Marina and Besòs. These will be withdrawn as normal tram operations restart.
Funding and Project Scope
The total investment for the current phase stands at €32.54 million. The Barcelona City Council has contributed €23.30 million for urbanisation and tram infrastructure, while the Generalitat, via ATM, provided €9.24 million specifically for the track doubling on Gran Via. This follows earlier investments, including €12.89 million from the council for the first phase and €46 million from the Generalitat for previously executed works.
