Bridge Relocation Approved
The Consorci del Besòs has definitively approved the construction of a new pedestrian bridge connecting the Sant Joan Baptista and La Catalana neighbourhoods in Sant Adrià de Besòs, following a five-metre relocation of the planned structure. The adjustment resolves a conflict between the bridge's foundation and an existing 25 KV underground power line, which was authorised by the municipal executive prior to the bridge project. The relocation is described in official documents as the "only possible alternative" to overcome the technical obstacle, ensuring the project can proceed after being stalled for several years.
Technical Hurdle Resolved
The initial design could not proceed due to an "interference detected between the foundation of the walkway at the planned location and the path of an existing 25 KV underground power line," according to the Consorci del Besòs. Because the power line was already legally authorised, the bridge plan had to be adapted rather than the line rerouted. The revised plan, which shifts the bridge between the Antonio Machado-Pessebre Vivent and Olímpic-Lleida lanes, was developed over months of technical recalculations. The construction contractor, SBS SIMON I BLANCO, SL, submitted a dedicated report on the pedestrian walkway displacement in April 2026.
Project Progress
The Executive Commission of the Consorci del Besòs gave initial approval to the modification in May 2026. The technical architect formally endorsed the changes on 7th October 2026, paving the way for the final green light. The bridge is part of broader urban integration efforts in Sant Adrià de Besòs, aiming to improve pedestrian access and strengthen social cohesion between neighbourhoods. It will join two existing river crossings: one at Carrer Olímpic connecting to Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, and another on Carrer de la Torrassa.
The objective is to create a safe and practical space for pedestrians, while at the same time fostering connection between neighbours and the inclusion of the neighbourhoods in the daily life of the city.
This new link is expected to enhance connectivity across the Besòs River, particularly in an area where infrastructure resilience has been highlighted as urgent following recent weather-related damage to nearby rail viaducts.
