Protesters demand protection of green corridor
On Saturday 24th October, the citizen platform Aturem el Pla de Ponent – Salvem el Calamot held a day of mobilisation in Gavà to oppose the Pla de Ponent urban development project, which plans the construction of around 4,800 homes on one of the last major undeveloped areas in the Baix Llobregat municipality. The event drew residents, activists and environmental advocates, with organisers reporting 140 tickets sold and many more participants joining throughout the day. In a social media post, the group stated: "We are many, and we will not stop!" and shared a photo gallery and videos from the gathering.
"We are many, and we will not stop!"
The protest focused on the ecological value of the Calamot area, located between Gavà and Castelldefels. The platform warns the project would disrupt ecological connectivity between the Garraf massif and the Llobregat delta, a vital natural corridor.
Project has formal approvals but faces ongoing resistance
The Pla de Ponent has advanced through several administrative stages. The Gavà municipal government approved the final modification of the land parceling project on 24th March 2021, with publication in the Butlletí Oficial de la Província de Barcelona (BOPB) on 13th April 2021. Further updates to construction pricing and regulations for the Canyars and Calamot river parks were also formally approved, as documented on the Ajuntament de Gavà’s official portal. Despite these approvals, the platform maintains that urban expansion is incompatible with environmental protection. It advocates for alternative models that prioritise natural conservation and social housing needs over large-scale development.
Next steps: Continued mobilisation
Following Saturday’s event, Aturem el Pla de Ponent announced plans for further actions to sustain public pressure. The group urges supporters to follow its social media channels for updates on upcoming protests and civic initiatives. The gathering served to strengthen alliances among local groups and reaffirm commitment to defending the territory, with organisers framing the struggle as ongoing and resolute.
