€1.3m Upgrade of Abandoned Mundet Pitch

Barcelona City Council has launched a public tender for the €1.38 million renovation of the derelict Mundet football field in the Montbau neighbourhood, part of Horta-Guinardó district. The project, managed by the city’s infrastructure agency BIMSA (Barcelona d'Infraestructures Municipals SA), aims to transform the long-unused dirt pitch into a modern artificial turf facility fit for youth football. Works must be completed within five months of contract award. The tender, published on 19th October 2026 and open until 9th November 2026, covers both the installation of new artificial turf and the full refurbishment of adjacent changing rooms. According to the official contracting portal of the Diputació de Barcelona, the base budget is €1.146 million excluding VAT, rising to €1.387 million including VAT.

New Artificial Turf and Facilities

The current field, unused for years and surfaced only with compacted earth, will be fitted with full-sized 11-a-side artificial turf, divisible into two smaller pitches for youth categories such as pre-benjamins, benjamins, and alevins. A non-existent irrigation system will be added, featuring six water cannons to maintain pitch quality. The outdated lighting, consisting of six unusable spotlights, will be replaced with 10 new floodlights mounted on six modern columns. The electrical system will also be overhauled to support the new installation.

The recovery of this pitch is key to allowing the future installation of natural turf at Nou Sardenya.

Changing Rooms to Be Fully Refurbished

The 222-square-metre changing room building, described in council studies as being in a 'general state of deterioration', will undergo complete internal renovation. It will house four team changing rooms, one for referees, and dedicated toilet facilities. Additional spaces will include storage for equipment, technical installations, and general use. The exterior will also be upgraded, with repairs to the facade and roof, including new waterproofing to prevent future damage.

Path Cleared for Natural Grass at Nou Sardenya

The redevelopment of the Mundet field is a prerequisite for CE Europa to return its youth teams from temporary grounds. Once the move is complete, the council can proceed with installing natural grass at the club’s historic Nou Sardenya stadium in Gràcia, a requirement for competing in the RFEF’s Primera Federació. The council has already initiated a separate €2.5 million project to redesign and re-turf Nou Sardenya, which currently suffers from chronic water leaks from the underground car park. The work is expected to take place over the coming seasons, with CE Europa not anticipated to play at home before the 2027–2028 season.
