Barcelona City Council will start a major renovation of Pau Alsina street in the Camp d'en Grassot i Gràcia Nova neighbourhood of Gràcia district in December 2026. The project's first phase will transform a section of the street into a single-platform area, giving priority to pedestrians. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and safety for local residents and visitors alike.

Pedestrian Priority and Budget

This initial phase, costing approximately €1.25 million, will last seven months. It covers the stretch between Travessera de Gràcia and Carrer de Romans. The primary goal is to make the street more accessible and safer for walking, especially given its naturally narrow design. Laia Bonet, First Deputy Mayor and Gràcia District Councillor, stated, "The transformation will help prioritise pedestrians in this area. Residents will walk with more peace and safety, particularly in narrow sections like this part of Pau Alsina street, which also has facilities such as Institut Montserrat Roig." This focus aligns with broader urban planning goals.

Connecting Gràcia Neighbourhoods

This renovation continues the pedestrian-friendly changes already implemented in front of Institut Montserrat Roig. It also integrates the street better into the existing pedestrianised network of Gràcia Nova. This network connects Plaça d'en Joanic with the Baix Guinardó neighbourhood. The works, funded through the Municipal Investment Programme (PIM), will also update street lighting and urban furniture. The project forms part of a wider municipal strategy. This strategy aims to clear pavements of obstacles and make them wider across the city. This improvement will benefit many residents of the Gràcia district, which is known for its distinct urban character.

Future Phases and Design

Future plans include work on the section between Carrer de Romans and Carrer de Pi i Margall. However, the City Council has not yet set a timeline for this second phase. This wider section will remain segregated, with pavements and a road. The renovation will widen pavements on both sides by 0.75 metres. It will also maintain two parking and service lanes. Tree pits will be partially placed within the parking strips to preserve pedestrian space. This design ensures both pedestrian comfort and necessary vehicle access for local businesses and residents.
