Mayte Castillo, the former director of Rodalies, has joined Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) as Deputy Director of Mobility Services for the territory. She will specifically oversee the new Tarragona tram project, known as TramCamp. This move marks a significant leadership change within Catalonia's public transport sector, according to La Vanguardia.

Castillo brings 38 years of experience from Renfe, where she started in administration. She later spent a large part of her career managing maintenance workshops across Catalonia. In 2018, she became the director of Rodalies, a demanding railway service, a position she held for six years.

For the past two years, Castillo directed the railway museum in Vilanova i la Geltrú. There, she worked to attract young talent to the sector. She collaborated with training centres and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) during this time. Her return to railway management at FGC is a notable career step.

New Role at FGC Operadora

Castillo will now work within FGC Operadora, the division managing the Vallès and Llobregat-Anoia lines. Her new responsibilities will include the TramCamp service. The Tarragona project involves a more urban operational style, differing from FGC's existing metropolitan lines.

The TramCamp project is currently under construction for its first phase. This initial stage will connect the towns of Cambrils, Salou, and Vila-seca. A second phase, without a set date, plans to extend the tram service to Reus and Tarragona.

Strengthening FGC Leadership

Castillo's appointment continues FGC's strategy to strengthen its leadership structure. This aligns with the arrival of Carles Ruiz as the company's president. Alicia Valle also joined as the company's General Director.

FGC has actively recruited experienced profiles. Agustí del Castillo, who directed the Trambaix and Trambesòs for 15 years, became manager of FGC Mobilitat in 2023. This division handles the future R-Aeroport line.

Ramon Vall, another recruit from the Barcelona tram system, joined FGC Rail in 2024. FGC Rail is a new division responsible for the Rodalies service in Lleida. Both the R-Aeroport and Lleida Rodalies projects face delays. These delays stem from issues with infrastructure or new trains.

Mayte Castillo's move from Renfe to FGC is the first instance of a director transitioning between these two public railway operators. Her expertise will be critical for the successful launch and operation of the TramCamp. This project aims to significantly improve public transport connectivity across the Tarragona region.
