Barcelona's Guàrdia Urbana launched a special operation this week, intensifying controls on motorcycles and mopeds across the city. Riders face potential fines of up to €500 for common traffic infractions. This initiative, which began on Monday, aims to improve road safety for these vulnerable road users.

Why Barcelona Targets Two-Wheelers

The council reported that this increased vigilance addresses the high vulnerability of motorcyclists and moped riders. Individuals on two wheels face up to four times greater risk of traffic accidents compared to car occupants. Agents are specifically targeting reckless and risky behaviours. The operation focuses on reducing accident rates and the number of victims.

Key Infractions Leading to Fines

Common infractions include not wearing a helmet correctly, using a mobile phone while riding, and illegally riding on pavements. Controls are particularly strict near sensitive areas like schools and hospitals. Additionally, officers are penalising riding in bus, taxi, or cycle lanes. They also target improper turns, abrupt manoeuvres, and failing to obey traffic signals. Improper overtaking and lane splitting are also infractions. Vehicle and driver documentation irregularities also fall under scrutiny. These actions not only increase accident risk but also incur significant financial penalties, which can reach €500.

Road Safety Strategy 2030 Goals

This operation aligns with the city's Road Safety Strategy 2030. The strategy aims to reduce serious injuries and traffic accident deaths by 50% by 2030. It also sets a long-term goal of achieving zero fatalities by 2050. The Guàrdia Urbana continues these special controls throughout the week. This effort works towards creating safer Barcelona streets for all residents and visitors.
