A gas explosion inside a flat in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat early on Wednesday morning left two people with light injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 00:24 on Avenida Severo Ochoa, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Emergency Response Mobilised
The Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) attended to a total of five individuals at the scene. However, only the two lightly injured people required hospital transport. One person went to Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, and the other to Hospital General de l'Hospitalet, both for further assessment.
The 112 emergency line received the initial alert, leading to a rapid deployment of resources. The Bombers de la Generalitat, Catalonia's fire service, sent four units to the location, according to La Vanguardia official news. Their primary tasks included ventilating the affected property and thoroughly inspecting the building's condition.
Minor Structural Damage Confirmed
The explosion caused a partition wall inside the flat to collapse, according to the Bombers de la Generalitat. Despite this, the fire service confirmed the incident did not result in "serious structural damage" to the overall building structure, according to Protección Civil España official site. This assessment helped ensure the safety of other residents.
SEM mobilised nine ambulances to manage the situation effectively and provide prompt medical assistance to all affected individuals. Their swift action helped stabilise the scene and ensure timely care for the injured.
L'Hospitalet: A Densely Populated City
L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, which borders Barcelona, is Catalonia's second-largest city by population. It is home to over 260,000 residents, making incidents like this particularly concerning for the local community. The Avenida Severo Ochoa area is a residential zone within this densely populated municipality.
Focus on Gas Safety
Authorities will likely investigate the exact cause of the gas deflagration. Such incidents show the critical importance of regular gas safety checks in residential buildings. Ensuring proper maintenance and adherence to safety regulations helps prevent similar occurrences across the Barcelona metropolitan area.
