Fire Contained Afternoon of Activity
Barcelona and Generalitat firefighters have stabilized a vegetation fire that burned for approximately two hours on Montjuïc mountain on Thursday 10 September 2026. The blaze started around 12:30 PM on Miramar road, just below Montjuïc Castle, and spread uphill toward the castle area, driven by a sea breeze. Eight ground units from the Barcelona Firefighters and three aerial units from the Generalitat Firefighters responded to the incident. Two water-bombing helicopters and one coordination helicopter were deployed due to the steep, inaccessible terrain, as confirmed by Eduard Caimel, head of duty for Barcelona firefighters.
Evacuations Carried Out, No Injuries
The fire affected an area of approximately one hectare between Miramar road and the castle, near the lighthouse. As smoke reached the vicinity, authorities cordoned off Montjuïc Castle, the cable car, and the Mayor's gardens (Jardins de l'Alcalde) as a precaution.
We carried out an orderly evacuation and did not allow entry,
said Caimel, confirming that visitors were safely evacuated from the castle and cable car areas. The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police, advised people near the castle to remain indoors during peak smoke conditions.
Defensive Units Positioned at Castle
Firefighters established a defensive unit near the castle to protect the historic site as the flames advanced. The use of aerial resources helped halt the rapid spread of the fire, which had its origin at Miramar road and moved uphill through rugged terrain with no foot access. According to reports from El Punt Avui and La Vanguardia, the fire was practically perimeter-controlled by mid-afternoon, with crews expecting full containment the same day.
Montjuïc Remains Key Cultural Site
Montjuïc, a historically strategic hill overlooking Barcelona, hosts major cultural sites including Montjuïc Castle, the Joan Miró Foundation, and CaixaForum. The area’s gardens, such as Miramar and Laribal, were designed for the 1929 Universal Exposition and expanded over decades, benefiting from a microclimate ideal for subtropical plants. While the fire caused significant smoke visible across parts of the city, operations prevented damage to infrastructure. Normal access is expected to resume once safety assessments are completed.
