Barcelona has recorded 12 traffic-related deaths so far in 2026, surpassing the total of 11 fatalities registered in all of 2025, with four months of the year still remaining. The most recent death occurred on Thursday when a truck driver died in an accident on the Ronda del Litoral.
This year’s figures mark a significant rise compared to recent years. Although 2024 and 2025 both recorded 11 deaths, no car, van, or truck driver died in a traffic accident in Barcelona during 2025, a statistic also seen in 2017. In 2026, three people have died while driving four-wheeled vehicles, including the truck driver and two others who died in a single collision at the intersection of Pallars and Fluvià streets on 28 June.
Motorcyclists most at risk
Of the 12 victims this year, motorcyclists make up the largest group, with five fatalities. The most recent was a 38-year-old man who died on 31 August after being hit by a car while stopped at a junction on Aribau street in the Eixample district. The driver fled but was apprehended by Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police, near Aragó and Bruc streets and is under investigation for reckless homicide, drink driving, and abandoning the scene.
Other vulnerable road users include cyclists and pedestrians. One cyclist and three pedestrians have also died in separate incidents this year.
'Something is failing', says road safety group

Marilina Ferrer, director and psychologist at road safety association Stop Accidents, said that despite ongoing campaigns to reduce drink driving, phone use, and speeding, “something is failing” in the city’s approach to traffic safety. She stressed that responsibility lies with all road users and public administrations to identify systemic gaps.
The association insists that adherence to traffic rules is essential for safer streets, warning that a single driver’s decision to break them can lead to fatal consequences.
Long-term trend still positive
Despite the rise this year, Barcelona has seen a significant long-term decline in traffic deaths. Since 2015, annual fatalities have remained below 30. Compared to the early 1990s, when more than 80 people died each year, the city has seen an 86% reduction in fatal accidents over the past 35 years. However, the city has never recorded fewer than 10 traffic deaths in a single year.
In contrast to Barcelona’s figures, Catalonia as a whole recorded 87 traffic deaths in the first eight months of 2026, an 11% decrease from the same period in 2025. Of these, 34 were motorcyclists, 10 were cyclists, and five were pedestrians. Serious injuries have also declined, with 490 reported this year compared to 601 in the same period last year, a drop of 18.5%.
