Clínic Barcelona Rises to 28th Globally

Hospital Clínic Barcelona has climbed to 28th place in the World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2027 ranking by Newsweek and Statista, up from 43rd in 2026. This marks a rise of 15 positions in one year and makes it the highest-ranked hospital in Catalonia and second in Spain. The hospital has advanced 24 places since 2025, when it was ranked 52nd. The improvement reflects its integration of artificial intelligence, robotics, telemedicine, and digital clinical systems into patient care and hospital management.

Vall d'Hebron Holds Top 40 Position

Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron is ranked 38th globally, despite dropping 11 places from its 27th position in the previous year, when it was the top-ranked Spanish hospital. It remains among the world’s 40 most technologically advanced healthcare centres.

The digital transformation of hospitals goes far beyond incorporating new devices. True technological maturity requires integrating digital tools into clinical processes, improving the patient experience, and using data to optimize healthcare management.

Five Catalan Hospitals Recognised

The international ranking includes five hospitals from Catalonia:

  • Hospital Clínic Barcelona – 28th
  • Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron – 38th
  • Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona (Esplugues de Llobregat) – 166th
  • Clínica Sagrada Família (Barcelona) – 292nd
  • Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge (L'Hospitalet de Llobregat) – 297th

This demonstrates that technological innovation in healthcare extends beyond major general hospitals to include specialist paediatric and metropolitan centres.

Spanish Hospitals in Global Context

Spain is represented by 13 hospitals in the 2027 list, which evaluates 410 hospitals across 33 countries, up from 350 in 30 countries the previous year. The ranking does not assess overall healthcare quality but focuses on digital transformation and adoption of advanced technologies. Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid leads the national ranking at 24th globally, having risen 56 places in one year. Other Spanish hospitals in the top 100 include Clínica Universidad de Navarra (29th) and Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre (62nd). Full results are available on the World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2027 website, which uses input from healthcare professionals, digital maturity indicators, and innovation accreditations to determine rankings.
