Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni announced his intention to include the 30% affordable housing reserve in his 2027 municipal election programme. This move signals a continued focus on increasing affordable housing options across the city.
Boosting Barcelona's Housing Supply
Collboni also called for greater private investment in Barcelona's housing market. He reminded investors that the city still has room for growth. He specifically mentioned the La Sagrera neighbourhood, which is undergoing significant development, and the ongoing projects in La Marina. These areas represent key urban expansion zones. "One single decision will not solve the housing problem," Collboni stated in an interview with La Vanguardia. "We must incentivise private investment and remind investors that the city can still grow."
Public Works and City Maintenance
The Mayor defended the more than 300 public works projects currently underway simultaneously across Barcelona. He highlighted the extensive maintenance efforts. "We are doing what had not been done in 12 years," Collboni noted. "For 12 years, we had not done systematic maintenance." He added, "Today's tunnel is tomorrow's traffic fluidity." These projects aim to improve infrastructure and daily life for Barcelona's 1.6 million residents.
Enhancing Public Safety and Civic Order
Collboni also addressed public safety concerns, advocating for tougher penalties for illegal weapons possession. He believes this measure will help reduce crime and shootings throughout Catalonia. "I have spoken with the government of Catalonia and with the government of Spain," he confirmed. "We must act decisively right now." The Mayor plans to reintroduce a proposal to the Ajuntament plenary for the Guàrdia Urbana, Barcelona's municipal police force, to use Taser pistols. He questioned, "There are 60 local police forces in Catalonia that have them, and also the Mossos d'Esquadra. Why can't the Guàrdia Urbana have them?"
Furthermore, Collboni supported the recent modification of the civic ordinance. He stressed the importance of residents adhering to city regulations. "The ordinance had not been touched for 20 years; it seemed a taboo," Collboni explained. "However, thanks to an agreement, we have done it and toughened the sanctions." He concluded by saying, "We come from a time when this discourse seemed frowned upon, and we already know the consequences it had."
Looking Ahead for Barcelona
These policy statements and actions reflect Collboni's vision for Barcelona, balancing urban development, public safety, and civic responsibility. His plans for the 2027 elections suggest a continued push for these priorities. They will shape the city's future for both residents and visitors.
