Barceloneta Beach, Barcelona's most iconic and busiest coastal spot, will not receive a Blue Flag. This applies to the 2026 summer season. This beach attracts up to 4 million visitors annually.
The Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac) excluded Barceloneta from its prestigious list. This makes it the only Barcelona city beach to lose the recognition from the 2025 list. Seven other Barcelona beaches successfully renewed their Blue Flag distinction for the second consecutive year.
These seven beaches include Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Icaria, Nova Mar Bella, Sant Sebastià, and Somorrostro. The Forum Bathing Area also retains its flag. The Blue Flag award signifies high environmental and quality standards, according to Official Blue Flag Program Website. For residents and tourists, the Blue Flag often indicates clean water, good facilities, and safety.
Catalonia's Blue Flag Count
Catalonia will have 101 Blue Flags in total for the summer of 2026. This regional count includes beaches and marinas across the territory, according to Barceloneta, Barcelona Wikipedia Article. The province of Barcelona also saw some changes beyond the capital.
Provincial Changes and Recoveries
Three beaches in the province of Barcelona regained their Blue Flag status this year. These are Canet de Mar Beach in Canet de Mar, Mota de Sant Pere Beach in Cubelles, and Pescadors Beach in Pineda del Mar. However, Barques-Estació Beach in Sant Andreu de Llavaneres lost its 2025 recognition.
The loss of the Blue Flag for Barceloneta Beach could impact its perception as a top-tier destination. City officials will likely address the reasons behind the exclusion to regain the award in future years.
