Barcelona expects a significant tourism surge this May. 115 cruise ships are scheduled to arrive. 34 congresses will welcome 90,380 delegates. This marks a strong performance for the Catalan capital's visitor economy, according to the Tourism Observatory.

The arrival of 115 cruise ships represents a notable increase compared to April, which saw 85 ships. May's figures also surpass the 101 cruise ships that arrived in April of last year. The busiest day for cruise arrivals will be 3 May. Seven large vessels expect to dock between 06:00 and 08:00. Nine of these ships will stay overnight in Barcelona, allowing passengers more time to explore the city. Industry representatives describe the cruise sector as an economic catalyst for Barcelona. They also aim to distance it from concerns about mass tourism.

Air travel capacity also shows a strong trend. El Prat Airport offers 6.5 million seats this May, a 6.6% increase from last year. This figure is only slightly lower than the peak summer months of July and August. May also stands out for its congress activity, hosting 34 trade fair events. These events will attract 90,380 delegates, in addition to other international visitors.

May's Strong Tourism Performance

May has become the second-best month for cruise ship arrivals this year. Only October, with 126 bookings, surpasses it. Looking ahead, June expects 94 cruise ships, up from 85 last year. July forecasts 88 arrivals compared to 79 in the previous year. August anticipates 95 ships, exceeding last summer's 86. Global conflicts in other regions contribute to the Iberian Peninsula's appeal as a stable destination, according to Port of Barcelona. This diverts tourism towards Barcelona.

Major Congresses and Delegate Numbers

While May sees a high number of congresses, it ranks as the third-highest month for delegate attendance. March led with 116,880 delegates from 16 events. This was largely due to the Mobile World Congress (MWC), which alone drew 100,000 attendees. February followed with 95,800 congress participants from 11 events. The Integrate Systems Europe (ISE) primarily drove these numbers, attracting 85,000 representatives. This May, Vitafoods Europe will be the largest congress, expecting 31,000 attendees. The Fespa Global Print Expo will also bring 25,000 delegates to the city.

Visitor Preferences and Future Bookings

The Tourism Observatory monitors visitor interests. This platform comprises the City Council, Provincial Council, Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Consortium. Recent Google searches show beaches and the Sagrada Família as the most popular search terms. Five of the top ten search concepts relate directly to Antoni Gaudí's iconic basilica. Future booking levels for Barcelona city and the wider region remain higher than last year. Barcelona maintains a similar booking level to Amsterdam among European cities.

Hotel Bookings and Demographics

In Barcelona city, Spanish visitors lead hotel bookings at 24.3%. American tourists follow at 19.4%. French visitors account for 7.1%, and English visitors for 6.9%. For the broader Barcelona geographic region, Spanish visitors make up 51.7% of bookings. French visitors comprise 9.6%, Americans 8.7%, Germans 4.2%, and UK residents 3.4%. Across Europe, Madrid currently leads the hotel booking rankings. London, Berlin, Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Vienna follow it.

The continued strong booking trends suggest a strong summer season for Barcelona's tourism sector. Officials will monitor these figures to assess the ongoing economic impact on the city.
