Tragic Diada Road Accidents Claim Two Lives
Two motorcyclists have died in separate head-on collisions on 11 September during Catalonia's Diada, raising the weekend death toll to three. The first fatality occurred at 1:33 p.m. on the N-260 near Ribera d'Urgellet in Alt Urgell (Lleida), where a 39-year-old man from Sallent collided with a car. Despite the arrival of five Mossos d'Esquadra patrols, two fire units, two ambulances and a medical helicopter, the motorcyclist could not be saved. Just ten minutes later, at 1:43 p.m., a second fatal crash happened on the C-59 at kilometer 16.4 in Caldes de Montbui, Vallès Oriental (Barcelona). A 28-year-old man from Palau-solità i Plegamans died after his motorcycle collided head-on with a car. Six Mossos patrols and three Medical Emergency Service (SEM) ambulances responded, but paramedics confirmed he had sustained fatal injuries.
Third Fatality Preceded Diada Weekend
These two deaths follow the death of a 27-year-old woman from l'Arboç, who died in a multi-vehicle collision on the N-340 in Altafulla, Tarragona, shortly before 10:30 p.m. on 10 September. Three vehicles were involved, and four others were injured. The Catalan Traffic Service has not yet determined the exact cause of the crash, which is under investigation. With these incidents, 93 people have now died on Catalan roads in 2026, according to provisional data from the Catalan Traffic Service. Of these, 37 were motorcyclists. The service has issued a renewed appeal for caution, particularly among two-wheeled vehicle users, during the special traffic operation deployed for the holiday period involving over 1,600 Mossos officers.
