Over 60 women professionals from Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) recently concluded the second edition of their corporate mentoring programme. The initiative, designed to boost female talent and leadership, held its closing event this past Tuesday, 5 May, at the Petit Palau within the Palau de la Música Catalana. This programme aimed to foster personal and professional development through guidance and shared experience.
Nazaret González, TMB's Director of People, opened the closing ceremony. She highlighted the company's ongoing efforts to incorporate more women into its workforce. Ms González stressed the importance of not abandoning equality measures, even when facing resistance to change. Her remarks showed TMB's commitment to creating a more inclusive work environment.
Empowering Female Talent
TMB's Chief Executive Officer, Xavier Flores, closed the event. He encouraged continued work to increase the percentage of women across all company areas and departments. Mr Flores also called for their values and working methods to influence the entire organisation. This vision seeks to embed female perspectives throughout Barcelona's primary public transport operator.
The year-long programme offered women from various company departments the chance to share experiences and grow personally and professionally. Participants chose whether to offer or receive mentorship. TMB's Organisation and People department then matched mentors with mentees. They considered the mentor's experience and the mentee's development goals.
A Year of Growth and Shared Learning
The duos worked together for nearly a year, building strong professional relationships. Many participants found the process mutually enriching, with both mentor and mentee evolving and learning from their roles. This shared growth was a frequently reported benefit during the closing event discussions. It showed the programme's success in creating a supportive network.
Two external experts also contributed to the closing event. Mar Gaya, a consultant specialising in equality policies for organisations, offered a talk. She provided context on the current situation regarding equality in companies and society. Her insights helped participants understand the broader challenges and opportunities. Lina di Giglio, a speaker and consultant, facilitated the meeting among the attending participants.
Programme Goals and Future Impact
Mentoring is a training method where an experienced professional guides a less experienced person. This helps the mentee's personal and professional development. The TMB programme specifically helps women develop skills by identifying and building on their strengths. It also fosters empowerment, networking, and equal professional growth opportunities within TMB.
The ultimate goal is to achieve personal and professional improvements with support from colleagues. This initiative reflects TMB's commitment to gender equality in Barcelona's public transport sector. TMB operates a vast network of buses and metro lines, serving millions of residents and visitors annually. Promoting diversity internally can lead to better service and a more representative workforce for the city. The company plans to continue these efforts, building on the success of this second edition.
