Neighbours intervene after street robbery
Residents of Sants helped recover a stolen necklace after a woman was robbed in broad daylight on Friday, 9 October 2026. The incident occurred at around 14:00 on Carrer dels Jocs Florals when a young man, walking behind the victim as she entered her home, abruptly turned and ripped a gold chain from her neck, according to images seen by ElCaso.com. The suspect fled the scene, with the woman chasing him and shouting for help. Her cries alerted bystanders, one of whom, a young man, immediately ran after the thief while the victim called the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police.
Chain recovered as thief escapes
The pursuit led more than 500 metres to Plaça de Sants, where witnesses say the suspect was briefly detained by residents. According to information obtained by ElCaso.com, the victim managed to recover her necklace during the confrontation. However, the man broke free and escaped before police patrols arrived. This incident follows a similar case in the Raval neighbourhood weeks earlier, where dozens of people cornered a man who had snatched a gold chain from a tourist. He was held until Mossos officers arrived, searched, and found the stolen jewellery. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of violent robbery.
Citizen intervention continues to play a crucial role in public safety, especially in moments when immediate police presence is not available.
Anyone wishing to report a crime can do so in person at a Mossos d'Esquadra station, including the one located at Barcelona-Sants station, or online via the official reporting portal. Appointments for in-person visits can be arranged through the Mossos d'Esquadra website.
