A violent street battle involving approximately 40 individuals erupted on Rambla del Raval in Barcelona's El Raval district on Sunday, 14 June, leading to four arrests. The large-scale confrontation between groups of Algerian and Pakistani origin involved machetes, sticks, and chairs, causing significant disruption in the densely populated area.
Conflict Originates at Local Restaurant
Police sources informed Metrópoli Abierta that the conflict started at the AWAMI restaurant, located at 5 Rambla del Raval, which is run by Pakistani citizens. The Algerian group reportedly took chairs from the restaurant's terrace without permission. They moved these chairs to the centre of the rambla to sit down. When the restaurant owners confronted them and demanded the chairs back, the Algerian group ignored their requests. This initial disagreement quickly escalated into a skirmish. Minutes later, a crowd of young Algerian men returned to the restaurant, armed, to attack the Pakistani group.
Police Intervene Amidst Public Disorder
Images of the incident quickly spread across social media platforms. Several units from the Mossos d'Esquadra and eight teams from the Guardia Urbana de Barcelona, including the Unit for Reinforcement, Emergencies and Proximity (UREP), responded to the scene. Police arrested four individuals involved in the fight. They face charges of threats, injuries, and damage. However, the tension did not end there. Approximately 90 minutes after the initial dispersal, a second fight broke out, forcing officers to intervene again on Rambla del Raval.
Ongoing Neighbourhood Tensions
Police sources confirmed this is not the first conflict between different national groups in El Raval. "Algerians have tried, more than once, not to pay for drinks or steal from this AWAMI restaurant," police sources stated. The disputes extend beyond this single establishment. "Every month there are arguments between Pakistanis and Algerians, Pakistanis and Moroccans, and Hindus and Algerians," the same sources added to Metrópoli Abierta. These clashes, while not entirely new, have left residents increasingly fearful.
Residents Fear Further Confrontation
Residents of El Raval expressed their helplessness and growing alarm over these public street confrontations. Some affected residents told Metrópoli Abierta that police presence has increased considerably in the area. Groups of Pakistani residents are reportedly positioned throughout Rambla del Raval, watching for any further provocation from Algerian groups. "As soon as they show up again, it will kick off," residents stated, adding they had never witnessed such a "brutal" street battle before. The district remains on high alert, with residents anticipating further incidents.
