Barcelona City Police and Catalan Police arrested four individuals on 4 June in a joint operation. They were selling cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy to foreign tourists on Las Ramblas. This action targeted drug sales in one of Barcelona's most famous areas.

Joint Police Operation

The operation also seized marijuana, 875 euros in cash, and drug manipulation equipment. Officers located a flat in the Sants-Montjuïc district. This flat was used to store the illegal substances. The investigation started after alerts from the Ciutat Vella and Sants-Montjuïc districts. These alerts reported individuals selling drugs to foreigners near Las Ramblas.

Investigation Details

It is common for drug dealers to approach tourists on the lower sections of this iconic boulevard. They often openly name the substances they are selling. Las Ramblas is a 1.2-kilometre tree-lined pedestrian street. It attracts millions of visitors annually. This makes it a frequent target for street crime, including drug sales and pickpocketing. The Ciutat Vella district, home to over 100,000 residents, encompasses Las Ramblas and is a historic heart of the city. The Sants-Montjuïc district, with a population of approximately 185,000, is a large area south-west of the city centre.

Addressing Street Sales

The joint investigation team confirmed the illegal activity through surveillance and tracking. The police canine unit supported the search of the storage flat. This operation aims to deter drug sales in key tourist areas. It also seeks to improve safety for both residents and visitors in Barcelona's city centre.
