Arrest Follows Patient Injury Complaint

The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police, arrested a 48-year-old man last Thursday in Barcelona’s Eixample district for carrying out aesthetic medicine procedures without proper qualifications. The investigation began at the end of April when a woman reported suffering serious health complications, including facial granulomas, persistent inflammation and visible facial deformities, after undergoing cosmetic treatments at the clinic. She had paid €2,600 for a series of facial procedures, including Botox and hyaluronic acid injections. After developing complications, she requested a refund, which the clinic refused. Her injuries required additional medical intervention.

Unlicensed Staff and Seized Medical Supplies

During a search of the premises, officers seized pre-filled syringes, 20 boxes of vials containing hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin, other medications, patient records and more than €4,800 in cash found inside a safe. The Investigation Unit is also examining the roles of two others: a 44-year-old woman who worked as a nurse and a 32-year-old man who performed similar treatments without the required permits. Checks confirmed neither had the official qualifications to carry out such medical procedures.

The Department of Health had previously ordered the closure of another clinic linked to the suspect in 2024 due to illegal practice and possession of unauthorised medical products.

On 16th June, investigators visited the clinic and spoke to another client who experienced complications after paying approximately €1,000 for treatment. When officers attempted to identify the 48-year-old suspect, he fled the building via a rear exit. The Department of Health confirmed that in 2024 it had shut down a separate aesthetic clinic connected to the same man for professional intrusion and for holding products not approved by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices.
