Barcelona's National Police have arrested a man suspected of defrauding a convent of Clarisse nuns of €124,502, as Liniaxarxa reported on 30 October 2026. The investigation began in September when the convent's administrators filed a complaint, stating the suspect had gained their trust by posing as a supplier of raw materials for their bakery, where the nuns produce and sell bread and baked goods.

Once a relationship of trust was established, the man allegedly began requesting repeated financial payments, claiming he needed to cover tax costs to access a supposed inheritance. Between November 2025 and August 2026, the nuns made multiple bank transfers to accounts provided by the suspect, accumulating the total fraud amount.

Following the complaint, police launched an investigation involving photographic identifications and other inquiries that led to the suspect's full identification. After failing to locate him, authorities issued a police database alert for his arrest.

Arrest at the Convent

On 28 October 2026, officers set up surveillance near the convent and apprehended the suspect when he arrived. The investigation continues with efforts to recover the defrauded funds and determine how the money was used.

The suspect presented himself as a trusted supplier before exploiting the nuns’ goodwill, police told Liniaxarxa.

Residents and religious communities are advised to verify the identity of individuals requesting financial assistance, especially when claims involve inheritances or urgent payments. For reporting similar incidents, contact the National Police via their official portal at www.policia.es.
