Catalan police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, arrested four individuals on Saturday, 2 May. They made the arrests shortly after a distraction theft in Sant Fruitós de Bages.
Incident Details
The incident occurred at 10:00 on Matagalls street. The victim had just finished shopping and left her handbag on the passenger seat of her car. One of the suspects approached her vehicle, asking for directions to a specific location. While the woman was distracted, another individual stole the handbag from her car.
Officers from the Mossos d'Esquadra Manresa station quickly intercepted the suspects' car on the C-55 road. They recovered the woman's stolen belongings. Police also found other personal items linked to previous victims inside the vehicle.
Suspects and Charges
The four individuals include three men and one woman. They are aged between 23 and 40. Collectively, they have 39 prior police records. Police have charged them with theft, bank fraud, and membership of a criminal group. The driver also faces a charge for driving without a licence. They have never obtained one.
Investigators discovered the group attempted to make fraudulent bank withdrawals using the victim's mobile phone. Further inquiries linked the suspects to at least five other theft incidents across Catalonia. These crimes involved similar distraction methods.
Links to Other Thefts
Two days before their arrest, on Thursday, 30 April, the group allegedly committed a theft at a shopping centre car park in Barberà del Vallès. In that instance, they targeted a victim loading groceries into their car. Additionally, two of the arrested individuals were involved in a theft at the weekly market in Berga on 31 January. During that incident, they also made two fraudulent charges to a victim's bank account.
The Mossos d'Esquadra attribute a total of seven theft offences, bank fraud, and criminal group membership to the four suspects. Their nationality has not been disclosed. The arrested individuals appeared before a duty judge on Monday, 4 May.
Police Warning and Vigilance
Distraction thefts often occur in busy public areas. These include supermarket car parks and petrol stations. Thieves use moments of vulnerability when individuals focus on other tasks. The Mossos d'Esquadra frequently issue warnings about these types of crimes. They advise drivers to keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight. They also recommend being wary of strangers who approach with unusual requests for help. This particular group's extensive criminal history suggests a pattern of organised activity. Their methods are designed to disorient victims quickly. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and secure their belongings.
