Fire Forces Evacuation of Five-Storey Building

Residents of a residential building at number 6 on Carrer del Mar in the La Mina neighbourhood of Sant Adrià de Besòs were evacuated on Sunday 1st November 2026 after a fire broke out in a ground-floor commercial unit. The incident began at 10:25 PM, according to the Bombers de la Generalitat (Catalan Firefighters), who confirmed the blaze originated in the premises owned by a 48-year-old man. Emergency crews, including eight fire units, five patrols from the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan Police), and medical personnel from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), responded immediately to contain the fire and ensure resident safety. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Man Arrested, Mental Health Concerns Under Review

The Mossos d'Esquadra arrested the building’s ground-floor occupant on suspicion of deliberately starting the fire. Police sources confirmed the 48-year-old man has pre-existing mental health issues, a factor being considered in the ongoing investigation.

The detainee reportedly has mental health issues, a circumstance that is being taken into account in the ongoing investigation to clarify what happened.

Firefighters declared the blaze under control by 11:21 PM. Crews then conducted ventilation operations in the stairwell, which had filled with smoke, before confirming the building was safe for re-entry. The evacuation lasted approximately two hours, after which emergency personnel escorted residents back to their homes.

Residents Return After Two-Hour Emergency Operation

The precautionary evacuation affected all residents across the building’s five upper floors. With no structural damage or health risks identified post-operation, occupants were allowed to return to their flats once the all-clear was given. The incident is part of a broader pattern of public safety concerns in the La Mina area, though authorities have not linked it to any wider criminal activity.
