Passengers using the Trambesòs tram network in Sant Martí, Poblenou, Glòries and Sant Adrià de Besòs face a summer of disruption from Thursday 3 July, when works begin on the seaward side of Gran Via around Glòries. The closure affects lines T4, T5 and T6 until Saturday 13 September, while Barcelona City Council says further partial disruption is currently projected until spring 2027 as the city builds the next phase of the Diagonal tram connection.
The works combine two schemes in the same area: the remodelling of Gran Via and the duplication of tram track, which means laying a second track where a single-track section now limits capacity and operations. For regular users, that means suspended sections, replacement buses and longer journeys through one of the busiest public transport corridors in the east of Barcelona.
- T4 is suspended between Glòries and Estació de Sant Adrià.
- T5 and T6 are suspended between Glòries and Besòs.
- The disruption starts on Thursday 3 July and is due to last until Saturday 13 September.
- Barcelona City Council says some effects linked to the wider works are currently projected to continue until spring 2027, subject to construction progress.
Replacement buses and unaffected tram sections
The Autoritat del Transport Metropolità, the Barcelona metropolitan transport authority, and Tram have set out a replacement plan for the closed sections. According to the official transport notice from ATM, passengers should use the special replacement bus service covering the interrupted Trambesòs corridor and check stop-by-stop updates in the Tram app and on operator notices at affected platforms.
During the closure, T4 continues to run between Verdaguer and Glòries. T5 and T6 continue to run on the outer part of the network beyond Besòs, serving stops towards the Besòs area and Sant Adrià de Besòs, where the tram corridor reaches the coastal side of the city.
That means the main break in service is across the central section near Glòries. Passengers travelling from El Besòs i el Maresme, the coastal neighbourhood next to Sant Adrià, or from Sant Adrià itself towards central Barcelona will need to change to replacement buses or other public transport for part of the trip.
"The summer period has been chosen to carry out work with the least possible impact on mobility," Barcelona City Council said in its summer works announcement.
Even so, the practical effect for passengers is extra interchange and slower journeys, especially at Glòries and along Gran Via during July, August and the first half of September.
Why works at Glòries are affecting the tram
The closure forms part of the wider overhaul of the Glòries area and the tram connection along Avinguda Diagonal. Barcelona City Council said in its final approval notice for the project that the scheme will extend the tram system and reshape public space between Glòries and the eastern side of the city.
City Council information on summer works planning says the Gran Via intervention includes urban layout changes alongside tram infrastructure works. The city has also linked the current phase to the route already opened between Glòries and Verdaguer, which began carrying passengers in November 2024, according to Barcelona City Council and ATM.
BARNA has previously reported on the wider Diagonal tram connection plan, which underpins the current construction timetable in the Glòries area.
Passengers can check real-time service changes before travelling in the Tram app and through the official ATM and Tram notices for T4, T5 and T6.
