Passengers using the Trambesòs, Barcelona's eastern tram network, will face major summer disruption from Friday 3 July as works at Glòries and along Gran Via suspend parts of lines T4, T5 and T6. The main closure is scheduled to last until Saturday 13 September, affecting regular journeys between central Barcelona, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona.
If you commute daily on the T4, T5 or T6, the immediate change is that some sections will have no tram service and passengers will need to switch to replacement buses or the metro and bus network. According to reporting verified against Barcelona City Council, ATM, the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità which coordinates public transport fares and planning, and multiple local outlets, parts of the disruption linked to the wider Diagonal tram connection project are expected to continue in phases until spring 2027.
Which tram lines are affected from 3 July
The summer works are tied to the doubling of tram tracks on Gran Via and street redevelopment around Glòries, part of the project to connect the tram along Avinguda Diagonal.
- T4: service is suspended between Glòries and Verdaguer during the works period, with passengers directed to other public transport options for that stretch.
- T5: service is cut on part of the line during the summer works affecting the Glòries area.
- T6: service is also partially interrupted because of the same works around Gran Via and Glòries.
The exact stop-by-stop operating pattern has been reported consistently by several local news organisations, but passengers should check live updates before travelling because temporary arrangements can change during engineering works.
Replacement buses and other options for passengers
For residents and commuters in Sant Martí, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona, the practical effect is that journeys into central Barcelona may take longer and require an extra change. Public transport alternatives include replacement bus services and parallel metro or bus routes, depending on the section affected.
Passengers can also use the integrated network under the ATM fare system, which allows transfers between tram, metro and bus with the same ticket within the usual conditions.
- Check live tram service information on the official TRAM service status page.
- Plan an alternative journey through the official ATM journey planner.
- Allow extra time if you normally travel through Glòries, Verdaguer or the Gran Via corridor.
Works form part of the Diagonal tram connection
The closures are part of Barcelona's long-running scheme to connect the Trambesòs and Trambaix networks along Diagonal. Barcelona City Council has said the current phase includes track works and urban improvements in the Glòries area, where the tram extension to Verdaguer began operating in 2024.
"Works in the summer aim to reduce the impact for citizens while carrying out major interventions in the city," Barcelona City Council said in its summer works announcement.
ATM said when the Glòries to Verdaguer extension opened that it was the first phase of the tram connection along Diagonal. The current summer disruption is part of the next construction stage, and several reports say some effects on the network and surrounding streets are expected to continue until spring 2027.
For now, the key date for tram passengers is Saturday 13 September, when the main summer closure is due to end, subject to the progress of the works.
