Aemet forecasts storms and cooler weather in Spain

Aemet says very strong storms are expected in northern and north-eastern Spain early this week, with a sharp temperature fall on Monday before another drop on Thursday.

Aemet, Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, has warned of “very strong storms” in the extreme north and north-east of mainland Spain at the start of the week after a trough entered from the north-west on Sunday. Barcelona residents and commuters should check local Aemet forecasts before travelling, as the agency expects unstable conditions and a noticeable change in temperatures.

The forecast was reported by Sur in English from Aemet’s announcement. The agency said the effects would be felt most strongly in the far north and north-east of the peninsula.

“Very strong storms” are expected at the beginning of the week, Aemet said.

Monday brings the first broad temperature fall

Aemet forecasts a widespread fall in daytime temperatures across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands on Monday. It said the decline would be particularly noticeable in large inland areas of the eastern half of the country, where values would be cool for the time of year.

The south-eastern coast and southern Balearic Islands are the exception, with temperatures expected to rise there on Monday.

Warmer spell due before Thursday decline

Temperatures are then expected to increase across almost all of Spain between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Aemet. The agency said the rise could be locally noticeable on the northern plateau, while Mediterranean areas are expected to cool.

Monday: widespread cooling across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.
Tuesday to Wednesday: rising temperatures across most of the country, with some southern provinces forecast to exceed 34°C.
Thursday: temperatures are forecast to fall again.

Aemet said Murcia, Seville, Granada, Bilbao and Badajoz could exceed 34°C between Tuesday and Wednesday. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain above 20°C in much of the Mediterranean area.
