Residents and travellers in eastern Spain face a changeable end to the week, with a risk of storms as intense heat continues on Friday, 31 July. RTVE’s weather forecast says the fourth heatwave of the summer is entering its final phase and is expected to end on Saturday as cooler air arrives from the north.

The shift may bring relief after widespread daytime temperatures of 35°C to 40°C, but the forecast also identifies a risk of thunderstorms in eastern parts of the peninsula. People planning road journeys, outdoor work or events should check the latest AEMET warnings before travelling.

High temperatures persist before cooler air arrives

According to RTVE, Friday will remain broadly stable across the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, although temperatures are set to fall in the northern third, the upper and middle Ebro valley, and the northern and central plateau.

  • Temperatures of more than 35°C are forecast across wide areas of inland Spain, inland Mallorca and the Canary Islands.
  • The middle and lower Ebro valley, north-eastern basins and Pyrenean valleys could reach 38°C to 40°C.
  • The Guadalquivir valley, Genil basin and inland south-east could see 39°C to 41°C.

Overnight temperatures are also expected to remain above 20°C across much of the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro valley and the southern half of the Canary Islands, producing tropical nights.

AEMET’s heatwave notice runs to at least 2 August

The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología, Spain’s state weather agency, issued special adverse-weather notice 26/2026 on 27 July. It said the heatwave would begin on Wednesday, 29 July, and was likely to continue until at least Sunday, 2 August, with a high probability of 70%.

The notice identified river valleys in the south-western quadrant, the Ebro valley, north-eastern basins and the Canary Islands as the areas covered. AEMET attributed the episode to high pressure over the western Mediterranean, clear skies and strong late-July sunshine.
