Projected Savings from Electric Fleet Transition
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has confirmed that the complete electrification of its bus fleet will result in savings exceeding €66 million. The estimate comes from TMB’s ongoing energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives, which include replacing diesel buses with zero-emission electric and hydrogen models. According to the Memoria de Sostenibilitat 2023 summary published by TMB, the shift supports broader goals under its Strategic Plan 2025, including reduced energy consumption and lower maintenance costs across the network [TMB Sustainability Report 2021, Sustainability Report 2022].
Current Progress and Infrastructure Investment
As of 2024, TMB plans to operate 232 fully electric buses, 20% of its total fleet, alongside 44 hydrogen-powered units. This includes 78 new electric buses introduced in early 2023, comprising 49 standard and 29 articulated models, costing €46 million [TMB News]. The H16 and V15 bus lines are already fully electrified, using opportunity charging at terminals via pantograph systems. Each station features a transformation centre and dual 500 kW chargers. The electrification of the V15 line makes it the second high-demand bus route in Barcelona to run entirely on electric power, following the H16.
Energy and Emissions Reduction Targets
TMB’s energy efficiency strategy aims to reduce electricity consumption by 68 GWh annually and prevent 122,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. These efforts are expected to save €20 million annually in variable energy costs and €7 million in fixed supply charges, amid rising energy prices affecting public transport operators. The energy saved will offset increased demand from expanded metro services, including the central L9/L10 section and planned extensions to lines L1, L3 and L4 [Sustainability Report 2022]. In addition to fleet upgrades, TMB is implementing regenerative braking systems on the metro network to feed recovered energy back into the grid, further supporting the bus electrification programme.
