Steering Group Established for Transport Heritage Project
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and the Barcelona City Council have formally established a working group to advance plans for a Public Transport Museum in the city. The group, formed today, brings together around ten individuals and organisations with ties to urban heritage, public transport, and sustainable mobility. Its purpose is to develop a shared vision for the museum, ensuring it reflects both the history of public transport in Barcelona and its role in shaping the city’s development and sustainability goals.
Two-Site Museum Planned with Interactive Focus
The proposed museum will follow models seen in cities like London, featuring two distinct spaces. The main permanent site will be located in Vall d'Hebron, above the existing Sant Genís metro workshop. It will house historic vehicles and artefacts from the TMB Foundation’s heritage collection and include interactive exhibits to promote the values of public and sustainable transport. A second, larger facility will store the majority of the heritage fleet and open to the public on special occasions, by appointment, or for organised visits.
Project Aims to Celebrate Mobility and Workforce
TMB emphasised its commitment to creating more than just an exhibition space. The museum aims to educate visitors on the evolution of urban mobility and the technical progress behind it, while also highlighting the work of the more than 9,000 employees who operate Barcelona’s public transport network.
The Public Transport Museum will help explain how mobility shapes cities and connects territories, while showcasing a century of progress in Barcelona.
The working group is expected to provide strategic momentum, drawing on expertise from civil society, heritage associations, and mobility advocates to ensure broad input into the museum’s design and mission.
