Service Disrupted Across R8 Line
The Rodalies R8 commuter rail line, which connects Martorell and Granollers Centre via Cerdanyola Universitat and Sant Cugat, was completely out of service this Monday morning following copper cable theft at Granollers Centre station. The theft disrupted power and signalling infrastructure, forcing Renfe to suspend all train services on the line shortly after 08:00. Commuters Stranded Amid Repeated Theft Crisis
Passengers faced significant delays and overcrowding, particularly students travelling to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where the Cerdanyola Universitat station serves as a key access point. Many commuters reported confusion and long wait times at stations including Sant Cugat and Rubí. Renfe activated a replacement bus service connecting all affected stations, though journey times increased substantially. This incident marks the second copper theft-related disruption on the R8 line within three months, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities in rail infrastructure security.
"A large majority, perhaps 80% of R8 passengers, are students. This creates dangerous overcrowding on platforms," said Adam Jiménez, student representative and member of the advocacy group R8 Existeix, in a statement published 26 September.
The repeated disruptions compound existing concerns about service reliability on the R8 line, already under scrutiny for insufficient train frequencies during peak hours. Earlier this week, Renfe introduced an additional morning service from Granollers at 07:21 to address congestion, but users say it is insufficient.
