16-Year-Old Led Global Ransomware Operation from Home

A 16-year-old boy from Alicante has been detained for leading the hacking group KillSec, which carried out more than 1,000 cyberattacks globally. From his bedroom, where he lived with his mother, the teenager administered an international network of hackers specialising in ransomware attacks. One of their targets was the Catalan government. Last year, KillSec launched a cyberattack against Infraestructures.cat, a key agency within the Generalitat de Catalunya, causing nearly €1 million in damages.

International Cybercrime Network Exposed

KillSec used malicious software to encrypt data and then demanded ransoms for its release. The group's operations spanned across continents, affecting public and private organisations alike. Spanish authorities identified the teen as the central administrator of the network, overseeing technical operations and coordinating attacks.

The arrest highlights the growing involvement of minors in sophisticated cybercrime networks.

Despite his age, the suspect played a critical role in one of the most active ransomware groups in recent years. Investigators found that members communicated through encrypted channels and often targeted institutions lacking robust cybersecurity defences.

What Happens Next?

Because the suspect is a minor, judicial proceedings will follow youth criminal procedures under Spanish law. Police are continuing their investigation to identify other members of the network and prevent further attacks. No further details on sentencing or trial dates have been released.
