One in Custody, One Still at Large After Midday Attack
The Guardia Urbana has arrested a man following a stabbing on Rambla del Raval in Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, at around 3:15 PM on Friday. The victim, injured in the attack, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. One of the two suspected assailants managed to flee the scene, and police are continuing their search. The incident occurred in a busy public area, underscoring growing concerns over the use of bladed weapons in daylight.
The roll-out forms part of the City Council’s comprehensive security strategy, which brings together increased police numbers, the Guàrdia Urbana Visibility Plan, the Public Prosecutor’s Office Liaison Unit, the Druida plan to combat drug trafficking in public spaces and the new by-law on positive community life.
Part of a Pattern of Knife Incidents Across the City
This attack adds to a series of recent incidents involving bladed weapons in different parts of Barcelona. On July 21, a man was fatally stabbed on Somorrostro beach after violating a restraining order against his partner, according to El Nacional. Other cases include:
- A July 1 stabbing in Verdum, in the Nou Barris district
- A minor injury on Mar Bella beach during the night of the Sant Joan festivities
- A May 30 incident in Nou Barris where a man was arrested after allegedly attacking a football fan following a bar fight
Police have not confirmed whether these incidents are linked, but the recurrence of stabbings in crowded areas has intensified public concern.
Increased Surveillance and Police Presence in High-Risk Areas
In response to rising incidents, the Ajuntament de Barcelona has expanded its video surveillance network. Work is underway to install 21 new cameras on Rambla del Raval, with construction scheduled to begin in September. Currently, Barcelona has 186 operational surveillance cameras. Additional units are being installed in Plaça Reial, Avinguda de la Catedral, and other strategic locations as part of a broader security strategy. The Mossos d'Esquadra and Guardia Urbana have also maintained a permanent police presence on Rambla del Raval since June, under the summer 'Plan Helios', following a large-scale brawl between members of the Pakistani and Algerian communities. Residents and visitors are advised to remain vigilant, particularly in high-footfall areas. Those with information about the escapee are urged to contact the Guardia Urbana via official municipal channels.
