Santa Coloma de Gramenet will build new protected housing on Monturiol street after the city council approved a collaboration with the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) on Friday 2 October 2026.

The project will deliver public housing at numbers 25 and 27 on Monturiol street, one of seven zones in a redevelopment plan to link Parc dels Pins with the Besòs River. The site, currently disused public land, will be converted into protected housing land to meet demand among young people and older residents.

The objective is to respond to the housing needs of groups such as young people and the elderly in the city, as well as to expand the city's public housing stock,

Joint Investment and Technical Work

The technical assistance for the project, including urban planning and construction, is backed by a €512,457 investment shared equally between the Ajuntament de Santa Coloma and the AMB. This funding covers the drafting of the project and subsequent street development.

The Monturiol Axis redevelopment is part of a broader urban transformation strategy. The city has allocated €115 million in investments through 2030 under its Pla d’Inversions 2025–2030, supported by both municipal borrowing and €6 million in FEDER European funds targeted at vulnerable neighbourhoods like Raval and Santa Rosa.

Wider Urban Renewal Underway

The Monturiol project forms part of a larger plan to redevelop key areas, including the second phase of Generalitat Avenue’s urban renewal, which will also include relocating the Civic Space during construction. The street’s rehabilitation has an initial budget of €2 million, with further funding from a €21.9 million municipal loan to support transformative infrastructure.

Other ongoing works include the new Local Police station (€13 million), the second phase of the Biodiversity Shelter (€3.9 million), and improvements to public spaces such as Alfonso Comín and Washington squares.
