Protecció Civil, Catalonia’s civil protection service, has kept its Inuncat flood-emergency plan on alert on Wednesday 30 September as further intense rain remains possible in coastal areas, including the central coast as far south as Baix Llobregat.
For Barcelona-area residents, the immediate advice is to limit unnecessary journeys during heavy downpours and stay away from flood-prone places. The current warning follows severe rain on Tuesday, when emergency alerts were sent to mobile phones in several parts of Catalonia.
Warnings extend into Thursday
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya, known as Meteocat, has updated its severe-weather warning for intense rainfall. Its notice gives a maximum danger level of four out of six, with the possibility of more than 40 litres of rain per square metre falling in 30 minutes.
Meteocat’s warning covers Wednesday from 18:00 to midnight and Thursday from 12:00 to midnight. Forecasts also allow for more than 20 litres per square metre in 30 minutes along the central coast as far as Baix Llobregat.
Advice issued for heavy rain
Protecció Civil said the Inuncat alert could be lifted on Thursday morning if weather conditions allow. It said some storm-related incidents elsewhere in Catalonia were still awaiting resolution.
People travelling or spending time outdoors during the warning period are advised to:
- avoid unnecessary travel when rain is heaviest;
- keep away from rivers, streams and drainage channels, which can fill rapidly;
- not enter basements if water begins to enter a building, and move to a higher floor where necessary;
- call 112 in an emergency.
Residents can check the latest warnings through the official Meteocat app.
