Monday Weather: Widespread Rain and Thunderstorms
Meteocat has activated a yellow weather alert for the entire Catalan coastal strip on Monday, 28 September 2026, due to forecasted intense rainfall and thunderstorms. Rain will begin early in the morning along the coast and increase in intensity throughout the day, with the possibility of accumulating up to 50 mm of rain within 30 minutes. The alert covers all coastal and pre-coastal areas, with the most significant conditions expected in the central coastal regions by afternoon. Showers will be accompanied by thunderstorms and may bring locally violent weather, including hail and strong wind gusts, particularly on the northeast coast. Maximum temperatures will remain below 30°C, continuing a downward trend after a record-breaking September that Aemet has confirmed as the warmest since 1950, with an average of 22.4°C across Spain.
Tuesday: Worst of the Week Expected
Conditions will deteriorate further on Tuesday, with Meteocat forecasting the most unstable day of the week. Persistent cloud cover will bring intense rainfall across the entire autonomous community, especially affecting the coast and pre-coastal zones. The yellow alert will persist in the morning, with warnings narrowing to specific regions by afternoon: Alt and Baix Empordà, Pla de l'Estany, Gironès, La Selva, Vallès Oriental, and Maresme. These areas may experience prolonged heavy rain, increasing the risk of surface flooding and transport disruption. Temperatures will drop again, reaching around 25°C, making Tuesday the coolest day of the week.
Government Advises Caution
Protecció Civil has activated the Inuncat civil protection plan in alert phase, urging residents to limit non-essential travel and avoid areas prone to flooding. The public is advised to monitor updates via the Meteocat danger weather status page and follow instructions from local authorities. While Wednesday may bring a temporary respite, precipitation is forecast to return from Thursday.
Residents are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary movement during peak alert hours, especially in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
