Occupation Halts Eviction, Opens Talks
This Wednesday, 30 September 2026, the Confederation of Housing Unions of Catalonia (COSHAC) occupied the headquarters of the Municipal Institute of Housing and Rehabilitation of Barcelona (IMHAB) in Barceloneta. The action coincided with the presentation of a new union section linked to the municipal body and aims to prevent an eviction from an IMHAB-owned property scheduled for 7 October in Nou Barris. COSHAC confirmed that the occupation has halted the planned eviction and opened a negotiation channel with the city administration. The first meeting between union representatives and IMHAB management is set for Friday, 2 October.
Union Demands Include Rent Controls and Repairs
COSHAC is calling for the 2 October meeting to establish a permanent negotiation table with IMHAB officials. The union’s demands include:
- An immediate halt to all active evictions from properties owned by the municipal body
- Regularisation of occupants in IMHAB flats through social rent agreements
- A review of recent rent increases, which the union says do not align with family income levels
- Urgent maintenance, conservation, and repair work on IMHAB’s housing stock
The union says it has long criticised the city government’s management of public housing and claims to have organised more than 14 IMHAB-owned apartment blocks across Barcelona.
