Barcelona-area police have arrested five people after uncovering two alleged fake dental clinics in Baix Llobregat, in Olesa de Montserrat and Esplugues de Llobregat. The clinics were sealed by police and closed by judicial order, according to the Government of Catalonia.
The case matters for patients across the Barcelona area because investigators say some clients suffered oral infections. Officers also reported rusty metal instruments that were later put into patients' mouths, along with expired or unauthorised medicines.
The arrests took place on 17 June. The detainees, aged between 32 and 60, are suspected of identity fraud, fraud, practising a profession without the required qualifications, and causing injury, according to the official government press office.
The Government of Catalonia said the investigation focused on two dental clinics in Baix Llobregat Nord and the wider comarca of Baix Llobregat. Police suspect four of those arrested were posing as dentists, while a fifth was the owner of the clinics involved in the case.
